It is widely accepted that alcohol is not good for your skin and many psoriasis patients have claimed that cutting out alcohol from their diet has improved their skin. Alcohol is known to dehydrate you and given that your skin needs water to stay healthy, it is easy to see the connection. I know from experience that a heavy night of drinking will leave my skin extremely sore and dry the next day.
With summer fast approaching, barbecues and parties are on the horizon and the pressure to drink can increase. So as everyone enjoys their beers, wine and cocktails what can you turn to? You could try the non alcoholic beers and wines but there are not really any great ones and the sugar content will still be quite high. If you are deciding to abstain from alcohol, then it has to be a mocktail! I’m sure many people will question the point of a non-alcoholic cocktail. Well, firstly they can make it appear like you're drinking so you may experience less peer pressure if you do decide to give alcohol a swerve. If that's not important to you, then the sole reason could be that they can be very tasty, cooling and fairly healthy too.
These are my ideas for mocktails that may just make not drinking a little more enjoyable and may intrigue your friends.
- 8 mint leaves
- 1 lime, cut into four wedges
- Soda water
- Apple juice
- 10 ml sugar syrup or sugar alternative (honey or agave syrup)
Muddle three of the wedges of lime, the mint leaves and sugar syrup (honey or agave syrup) in the bottom of a glass. Add crushed ice almost to the top. Add apple juice to about two thirds of the glass, top up with soda water and garnish with the last lime wedge and a few mint leaves.
Cool as a Cucumber
- Half a cucumber
- Half a lime
- 6 mint leaves
- Elderflower cordial
- Soda water
Okay, we have mint and lime again, but this is a completely different taste to the mojito and slightly healthier as there is no sugar syrup at all, although you may want to add some sweetness depending on your taste. Peel the cucumber with a veg peeler twice, the first to remove the first layer of skin, the second to roll up as a garnish. Roughly chop the rest of the cucumber and place in a blender with the juice of half a lime and the mint leaves. Drain the juice through a sieve and pour into a tall glass filled with ice and add a dash of elderflower cordial for flavour. Give it a little stir and add mint leaf, a lime wedge and rolled cucumber slice for garnish.
- Fresh orange juice (I used Tropicana Ruby Breakfast juice)
- 2cm piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and grated
- Sprig of rosemary
- Soda water
This is quite an easy one to make, a great alternative to bucks fizz and with fresh ginger in there it may even help keep the cold germs at bay. Fill a tall glass with ice and using a sieve or tea strainer, squeeze as much juice from the grated ginger as you can. You really only need a little of the ginger juice unless you like a very fiery taste. Fill two thirds of the glass with the orange juice and top with soda water for fizz. Add a sprig of rosemary for garnish. The rosemary does add to the flavour, it's not there just for show.
Strawberry and Blueberry Daquiri Mocktail
- 6 large ripe strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped
- 12 blueberries
- Coconut water
This is a bit of a show stopper and the easiest to make. Make sure the strawberries a re really ripe, and the same with the blueberries to make them really sweet otherwise you will need a drop of sugar syrup or honey. If you are a smoothies fan then this will put your smoothies maker to use too. Add ice, the fruit and some coconut water to a blender. Pour into a cocktail glass and you're done, it really is that simple. The coconut water added a touch of the Caribbean to give you that holiday feeling. There are a lot of claims that coconut water is very good for you too and along with coconut oil can aid healthy skin. Instead of adding ice to this, you could freeze the coconut water and use that as the ice.
All the drinks I have put together here made me forget that they were alcohol free – the mojito tastes every bit as good as one with rum. The ginger spice, especially because of the ginger juice, gives you that warming burn down your throat. So whether you simply don't enjoy alcohol, or want to cut alcohol out and not miss it, I hope these mocktails will help you enjoy those hot summer parties.
