Well that was a quick year! Here we are again in the month of glitz, glamour, sequins and sparkle. The month that, for so many years, was the cause of much angst as I struggled to find something to wear that would keep my psoriasis covered, yet allow me to look suitably festive and on-trend.

At this stage, if you’ve been following my blog posts, you’ll know that the answer to the party-wear question is invariably maxi dresses, sequins and jumpsuits. However, although I will address these in a moment, what is truly important is the ability to accessorise these items so that you ring the changes and keep your look current.

This Christmas, two trends that have dominated the catwalks are sock boots and tassel earrings. Like the ‘Frankie Says Relax’ tee shirts of 1985, I firmly believe that the tassel earrings will forever be associated with 2017! Handily the favourite shade right now is red, so in one fell swoop you’ll be perfectly clad for the festive season. Sock boots come in all shapes and sizes and are the ideal way to cover your legs if you want to conceal psoriasis. They work with mini dresses, midi dresses, maxis and culottes, and there’s a pair to suit everyone from over the knee to ankle length. These River Island Black Pointed Over The Knee Boots will add glamour to even the plainest of outfits.

Or if you’d prefer a more manageable heel, these red Kitten Heel Sock Boots from Next are simply gorgeous. Just add opaques!

Footwear sorted, let’s look at the other big accessory of the season. At this stage, the bling-a-ding-ding necklaces of the past few years have been well and truly consigned to the jewellery graveyard and now every fashionista worth her salt has a pair of tassel earrings to match every outfit! You could seriously splash the cash on a clip-on pair from Oscar de la Renta, but in the interests of economy, I opted to choose these Red Bead and Tassel Drop Earrings from Topshop.

Now that we’ve ensured your accessories are just right, it is simply a question of deciding which look you want to go for. Most of the items I’ve chosen will be wardrobe work-horses, as the last thing we want is to spend a fortune on a party outfit that will spend the rest of the year hanging unworn in your closet.

Starting with some sparkle, and nothing says ‘party’ more that this Pretty Little Thing Sequin Top from Asos.

The question is now, what to wear it with? You could choose the old faithful classics of some coated or faux leather skinnies. And that would be a great look! But what about making it a tad more current, by pairing it with sock boots or over the knee boots as before, and a pair of H&M Culottes with Side Slits? Stylish and comfortable – not always an easy combination to find!

If classic is your preferred style, then a look that will never date is the aforementioned skinny paired with a simple black vest and a white blazer. Handily, this Blazer with Rolled Up Sleeves from Zara already has the sleeves pushed up to give a dressier feel. Pair this with a vest such as the H&M Satin Top complete with some lace trimming for a classic evening look. And finally, to inject a modern twist, add a pair of red tassel earrings.

But if we’re honest, this year it’s all about the dress. And the good news for those of us with flaky skin is that there are tons of options to choose from … yes! There are even options with sleeves … dresses that will actually cover us. I know! All hail the fashion Gods! In a bid to appeal to every budget, I have chosen two that tick all the boxes, albeit at different price points. First up we have the Long Striped and Floral Print Dress from Zara which would look absolutely fabulous with the red kitten heel sock boots. For a more streamlined silhouette add a belt to pull in the waist. This dress would last you well into spring (and let’s be honest, summer too, in this neck of the woods!) worn with trainers and a biker jacket.

A greater investment, is the Katie Dress from Rixo London. A profusion of colour, this dress is described as “sophisticated enough for afternoon tea, stylish enough for evening soirées, and classic enough to wear time and time again.” OK, that’s me sold!

Whatever you choose to wear this party season, remember it’s the company and not the clothes that are the most important thing. Finally, I would like to wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful and Healthy New Year.
